December 7, 1977 Saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who astounded listeners by playing three horns at once, died Monday at a hospital in Bloomington, Ind., hours after his last concert. He was 41. Rahsaan Roland Kirk Jazz produced many multi-instrumentalists before Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and has produced many more since his death in 1977. But none embodied the idea of multi-instrumentalism as definitively as Kirk.
When avant-garde pioneer Rahsaan Roland Kirk made his Newport Jazz Festival debut in 1962 he was billed as "Discovery of the Year." Six years later, Kirk returned to Newport for his second appearance, then got the call once again from Newport impresario George Wein the following year.
