The mining operations brought life to the village with as many as 168 employees and the export of ore on ships heading abroad. The story of the mines begins in 1881 when tenant farmer Gregorius Hansen Birkeland discovers zink, iron and copper ore in the ravine. In 1882 Saude Grubecompagni (Saude Mining Company) starts a mining operation with a workforce of 20 men.

At its peak, the mine had 160 employees and was a major part of zinc exports from Norway. In 2001 Peter Zumthor was commissioned by the Norwegian road administration to design a rest area, museum and cafe. After a long period with planning and design changes, the construction started in 2008.
